Install Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on TouchPad

[UPDATED 3/19/12] - Add link to Alpha 2 - replace all references to Alpha 0.5 with Alpha 2 to install the newest version of CyanogenMod

These are instructions for the CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 0.5. If you have any questions, just ask me in the comments.

Download all necessary files

Install Palm Novacom Drivers

1. Make sure you have Java (JRE) if you don't download here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
2. Run the jar file and Install Novacom

Prepare for Installation

1. Copy ACMEInstall2 to "C:\Program Files\Palm, Inc"
2. Connect HP TouchPad and enable USB Drive mode
3. Create "cminstall" folder on TouchPad drive
4. Copy the following file to the "cminstall" folder:

  • update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-Touchpad-alpha0.5-fullofbugs.zip
  • update-cwm_tenderloin-1012.zip
  • moboot_0.3.5.zip
  • gApps 4.0.3 11.12.22.zip

5. Reboot your TouchPad into Recovery

    1. Go to the Settings tab
    2. Choose Device Info
    3. Select "Reset Options" button
    4. Tab restart
    5. Once the screen goes black, press and hold the volume up button until the big USB icon appears

Installation

1. Open command prompt
2. Type and enter
cd "C:\Program Files\Palm, Inc"
3. Type and enter
novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2
* This can take a few minutes (lines of commands should be scrolling on the TouchPad, if this is not happening the Novacom drivers didn't properly install)

Installation of ICS is completed but missing Google apps.

Install Gapps

1. Use volume keys to select ClockworkMod (select by hitting home button)
2. Use volume keys to select "install a zip from SDcard"
3. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
4. Select "cminstall"
5. Select "Gapps ICS 4.0.3 11.12.22.zip"
6. Select "Yes - Install Gapps ICS 4.0.4 11.12.22.zip"

Finish

Select "reboot system now"

It'll automatically boot into ICS without any selection.

You can also install the novacom drivers through the WebOS sdk. You can find the SDK here: https://developer.palm.com/content/resources/develop/sdk_pdk_download.html

I looked into it and found that it can be two different issues.

      1. Try uninstalling the Novacom drivers from the Control Panel and then re-installing with this .jar https://dc354.4shared.com/download/ihoWi0V2/WebOSQuickInstall-431.jar

      2. It can be a problem with the USB cable or the computer's USB port. Try using a different computer and a different cable (if you happen to have them).

        Joe,
I've done it all over again.
        Fresh download of all files.
Fresh upload to folder 'cminstall' on HPTP.
        Other computer with Novacom driver.
And at sudden after some time waiting in recovery mode and watching meriads of lines popping up the job was done.
        Android is working fine
Only thing is, the camera doesn't work.
I'll have to dig in that.
        Many thanks for your advises.
        Have a nice day.
        Jan G.M. Meijer.

Glad that everything is working. Currently the camera does not work, since it's an alpha build. Hopefully, in the near future they will have it working.
